Tips on How to Talk To Clients, Convince and Get the Web Design Deal

Even for the most creative of web designers, convincing the client to love their work can be really tough task. This should however not be a barrier in interacting with them and proving that the design will work for them. It is all part of the game plan in which web designers find themselves. Convincing and persuading client is an unenviable job, but with a little tact and skill anyone can do it. However, designers should expect them to challenge you and oppose you tooth and nail. The good news is you can convince them in the end.

There is one little thing that you must remember however; never try to convince your client for the sake of it. If you are not convinced so will your client be. Your objective must always be to give your best, so that, at end they are convinced. You will find that most customers are simple to deal. To persuade others, you will have to educate them first. If you are young and don’t have previous experience in interacting with clients, you will indeed experience some difficulty, but over a period of time, you should be able to overcome it.

Here are 5 tips that you can use to convince and make your design acceptable to customers.

1.    Prove your professional competence:  You should always manage to keep designer-client relationship mutual in which the designer should have total control, as well as give the consumer an opportunity to reveal their opinion. To do that, you will have to apprise the consumers ahead by telling them what they can expect. This will lay the foundation for putting you in the driver’s seat, rather than the converse.

2.    Develop a positive respect for your customer’s opinions: Before you come out with any explanation in support of your design, allow your customers to articulate their point of view. Never be critical of their point of view, instead tell them what are positive in your designs. When you notice something absurd in their view, start with “Yes” and end it with “But” and prove why your design will better for his or her organization. The trick is to keep your customers’ pride intact even as you push for your cause.

3.    Educate your clients: This you should do even before you start to work on the project. The first thing to do is have a brainstorming session with your customer, during which time, you will get the opportunity to tell them what they can expect from your design team and how you will go about doing it. This particularly important for both the customer and you so that the limitations and on both sides are clearly understood.

4.    Keep your presentation flawless: One of the biggest mistakes designers can do is show a version of the design half done. This is particularly a dangerous situation and chances are that it will be rejected outright. Presenting your work is important and it should be done holistically. Remember that the first impression you make will stay to the end of the project. Mock-ups are not advisable unless you are sure that it will match the final outcome. Always try to produce something that is innovative which your customer may have not experienced before.

5.    Show your customers the advantages of your design: It may be tempting for the designer to show the decorative aspect of the design, but more important is to show your customers, the utility part to it. You will need to show them how it will add to their organizations profitability. Always try to impress your customers the business impression your design will make.

Convincing customers is part psychology and part science. Before you start, rehearse your arguments in your mind rather than saying something absurd impulsively.
